An Ancient Farm, Festive Fun and Trails

Plus this week's events, offers and more

Good Morning Hampshire,

December is here, and I don’t know about you, but I’m already feeling the festive buzz. Whether it’s the twinkling lights, the smell of mulled wine, or the excuse to wear a Christmas jumper every day, this month just has a little extra magic in the air.

Also, have you visited somewhere in Hampshire that you think deserves a spotlight? I’d love to hear from you! Simply hit reply and share your favourite spots - whether it’s a hidden gem, a festive event, or a breathtaking view, it could be featured in an upcoming newsletter.

Now let’s dive into this week’s newsletter…

Step Back in Time This December at Butser Ancient Farm!

Located in Waterlooville, Butser Ancient Farm is a treasure trove of history and archaeology. This not-for-profit Community Interest Company is more than just a farm—it’s a living laboratory where ancient building techniques and ways of life are brought back to life through pioneering experiments. Founded in 1972, it has become a world-renowned hub for experimental archaeology and a favourite for history buffs, schoolchildren, and families alike.

Butser Ancient Farm in Winter.

While the farm is closed to the public during winter (November to March) except for educational visits and special events, December offers magical opportunities to explore its wonders.

Here are the highlights for December:

  • Tales of Winter Magic (Friday, 6th December, 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM)
Gather around the fireside in the great roundhouse for a festive family storytelling session with the magical Red Phoenix. A perfect way to kick off the season!

  • Midwinter's Magical Quest - Yules of Yesteryear (Multiple Dates: 7th-8th, 14th-15th, 21st-22nd December, 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM)
Step back in time to experience festive traditions before the modern era. Explore ancient buildings, enjoy seasonal crafts, and immerse yourself in Christmas past.

  • Yuletide Tales with Jason Buck (Friday, 13th December, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM)
Let award-winning storyteller Jason Buck whisk you away with yuletide tales by a glowing hearth—a cosy evening full of winter magic.

If you can’t make it this December, don’t worry—Butser Ancient Farm has events planned for January and February too! From winter workshops to more magical experiences, there’s plenty to look forward to in the new year.

With glowing reviews from visitors praising its unique charm and educational value, it’s a destination worth adding to your list. Or, if you’d prefer to soak up the history in warmer weather, bookmark this gem and plan a visit in the spring when the farm fully reopens for the season.

Looking for a way to keep the kids entertained this December? Head over to Basingstoke Leisure Park for a magical Christmas trail! Santa's cheeky elves have hidden presents all over the park, and it's up to you to help find them.

Grab a free trail map from Basingstoke Aquadrome, McDonald's, or Loddon Vale Bowls and explore the park while ticking off the trail points. It's a fun, free way to get some fresh air, and there’s even a chance to win prizes like a family pass to the Aquadrome, McDonald's vouchers, or bowling coaching sessions.

The trail runs from now to 31st December, and prize draw entries close at 4pm on the 31st. Don’t miss out on this festive adventure!

Sidenote: Thinking of making the trip to Basingstoke for the trail? Why not make a day of it?

Basingstoke has so much to offer - Wander the cobbled streets and step back in time at the Milestones Museum (read about my experience here). For thrill-seekers, experience the sensation of freefall at iFLY Indoor Skydiving or make a splash at Basingstoke Aquadrome, complete with rapids, flumes, and a baby beach.

Not enough? Enjoy year-round ice skating at Planet Ice, catch the latest blockbusters at the ten-screen Odeon cinema, or try your luck at Hollywood Bowl.

Captured last week, this frosty scene perfectly highlights the charm of Twyford Waterworks, located near Winchester. The crisp winter morning, combined with the soft hues of the sunrise, makes this shot truly magical.

📍 Did you know? Twyford Waterworks is a Scheduled Ancient Monument that tells the story of water extraction, softening, and supply over the past 120 years. Restored by dedicated volunteers, it opens to the public on the first Sunday of the month from May to October. Visitors can explore a majestic steam pumping engine, water-powered engines, and a fascinating Wildlife Trail. Bookmark it for next year.
