Why Milestones Museum is a Must-Visit
Step Back in Time: A Fun-Filled Day at Hampshire’s Living History Museum
Earlier this year, we had such a brilliant day out at Milestones Museum in Basingstoke! If you’ve never been, let me tell you – this place is a great day out.
The moment you step inside, you’re transported to another time. Milestones isn’t your typical museum; it’s an entire Edwardian street brought to life indoors. Think cobbled streets, vintage shopfronts, and enough historical charm to make you feel like you’ve stepped into a period drama.
This space is incredible.
A Walk Down Memory Lane (Literally!)
We spent hours wandering through the Victorian and 1930s streets, marvelling at the shops, houses, and even mini-factories. Everything is based on original buildings from the local area, which made it feel so authentic. One minute we were peeking into the saddler’s workshop, and the next, we were learning how irons were once heated in the ironmonger’s shop.
If you’re into history, you’ll love seeing how people lived and worked back then. And even if history isn’t your thing, it’s just fascinating to imagine life before smartphones and supermarkets.
Fun for All Ages
For us, the recreated seaside pier was the highlight. My little one couldn’t get enough of the retro arcade games, and I’ll admit, I had just as much fun reliving my childhood with a few rounds on the claw grabber and shove pennies.
The best part? It’s super affordable. Games are just 50p a go, and for the old penny machines, you can buy a batch of replica coins (£2 for around 10) using a card machine. Honestly, it’s such a fun and nostalgic experience that’s hard to beat.

Sweet Treats and a Pint of History
After exploring, we popped into the 1940s sweet shop, Abrahams. It’s like stepping into a time machine – jars of colourful sweets line the walls, and you can pick up your ration’s worth of niceties.
If sweets aren’t your thing, there’s also a charming little Edwardian pub, The Baverstock Arms. It’s a real working pub, open for a few hours each day. The costumed staff made the experience even more special – one of them shared a fascinating story about what life was like back in the day while pulling a pint.
More Than Just History
Milestones has so much to offer beyond its incredible displays. There’s a vintage tea tent where you can grab cakes and drinks, and The Rooftops Café serves meals like classic fish and chips, lighter bites, and children’s options. There’s even a spot for picnics outside, perfect for sunny days.
And here’s a major bonus: your ticket covers you for the entire year. That means you can return as many times as you like without paying again. Considering how much there is to see and do, it’s amazing value for money.

Why You’ll Love It
Whether you’re visiting with kids, on your own, or with friends, Milestones has something for everyone. From cobbled streets and vintage vehicles to the Teddy Bear Museum and seaside amusements, there’s a little bit of magic for all ages.
And it’s not just me who thinks so – Milestones is rated as one of the top attractions in Hampshire on TripAdvisor. Plus, its location in Basingstoke’s Leisure Park makes it easy to turn your trip into a full day out. Fancy bowling, a movie, or even a swim after your visit? It’s all right there.
Plan Your Visit
If you’re looking for a fun, educational, and unique day out, Milestones Museum is definitely worth a visit. There’s no need to ‘remember the good old days’ – at Milestones, you can live them!
