So I’m assuming you’re thinking about visiting Southampton or looking for something different to do? I’ve lived, worked and went to University in Southampton, so I know it well. There’s quite a mix of things to do, so if you’re only here for a day or two, it's best to prioritise what activities you would like to do depending on your interests.
In this article, I’ll share the best things to do and places to visit in Southampton city centre. At the end of the article, I’ll share some other articles if you want to go further out of the city.
Before I go into the details, it might be worth reading is Southampton Worth Visiting to see if it’s a place that suits your interests and budget.
But first of all here is a map of all the places to go…
1. Explore Southampton’s Old Town
Exploring Southampton's Old Town is an engaging way to experience the city's historical and contemporary aspects side by side. This area is a testament to Southampton's long history, where ancient paths once used by knights and merchants are now surrounded by modern amenities.
![Bargate Southampton](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/63b4492f718e031ad5f81b45/65ddef7e22089f170b9170ea_Bargate%20Southampton%20(2)%20(1).jpg)
The Old Town is renowned for its medieval town walls, significant for their historical value and the perspective they offer on the city. Visitors have the opportunity to walk along parts of these walls, gaining elevated views that connect them to the past.
![Walk the Southampton Walls Sign](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/63b4492f718e031ad5f81b45/65ddefd80445d916794f3e7e_Walk%20the%20Walls%20Southampton%20(1).jpg)
However, it's noteworthy that some sections of the walls no longer stand due to damage sustained during World War II. This loss highlights the impact of the war on Southampton and adds depth to the history encountered in the Old Town.
God's House Tower is a key historical site within the Old Town. Originally serving as a part of the city's defences, it now functions as a museum, offering insights into Southampton's past and presenting various artefacts. The presence of such historical sites, alongside areas where the walls have been lost, underscores the unique character of Southampton.

2. Visit the Tudor House and Garden
In the middle of Southampton's Old Town, there's a really interesting place, which is the Tudor House and Garden. It's a great spot if you want to learn about what life was like in Tudor times. The Tudor House is more than 800 years old and is built with big wooden beams, which looks pretty cool. There's also a beautiful Tudor garden that you can enjoy if the weather is ok.
When you go inside, you'll see displays that tell you about the history of the area. There are also fun things for kids to do, like dressing up and following trails to explore. It’s one of my daughter's favourite places to explore in Southampton.
The house has a lot of stories to tell. It was home to some rich traders and talented artists. It even got damaged during the Blitz, but it's been fixed up since then.
