Have you ever walked through a living carpet of bluebells? Just 10 minutes north of Winchester, Micheldever Woods offers one of Hampshire's most stunning natural displays. Last weekend, I finally decided to see what the fuss was all about - and I wasn't disappointed.
Micheldever Woods is classed as an ancient woodland and is renowned for its spectacular bluebell season, where the forest floor is transformed into a sea of blue each spring.

Things You Need to Know Before You Go
If you’re looking to visit, here are some key tips and practical information to help you make the most of your trip:
1. Best Time to Visit: The bluebells typically bloom from late April to early May. To see them at their best, aim to visit during these weeks. The woods can get quite busy, especially on weekends, so consider going early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
2. Getting There: Micheldever Woods is located just 10 minutes north of Winchester. On your sat nav, follow this address: A303, Winchester SO21 3SP.
3. Parking: There is a free car park near the main entrance, but spaces are limited. During the busiest weekends in bluebell season, there are only about 30 parking spaces. You might find it full if you arrive later in the day.
4. Facilities: Near the car park are a couple of picnic tables if you’d like to bring your own food. However, no public toilets are in the woods, so plan accordingly.

Walking Trails
There are two marked trails throughout the woods:
- Archaeological Trail: This trail takes about half an hour and is 2.4 km (approximately 1½ miles) long. It will guide you around fascinating archaeological sites within the wood, such as ancient burial mounds.
- Family Trail: This 1.5 km circular route is designed to be family-friendly. It is quite easy without any steep slopes or gradients, though it can be muddy in some places.
When you arrive in the car park, look out for this sign, which will tell you everything you need to know.

What’s Nearby?
Of course, Winchester is nearby. However, the Grange at Northington is a 10 minute drive if you fancy exploring a bit more. It’s a prime example of Greek Revival architecture, set within a landscaped park. Originally a 17th-century brick building, it was transformed by architect William Wilkins between 1809 and 1816.

If you’re looking for a place to eat or drink, The Yard, located about a 10-minute drive from the woods, offers excellent coffee and light meals. There are also a few local pubs and restaurants in the nearby villages, such as The Woolpack Inn and The Northbrook Arms, which both have good reviews.
