I'll admit it: I'm not the biggest fan of gin (maybe I am now). But just like my love for Hampshire's sweeping landscapes and rich history, I’ve always been curious about the stories and heritage behind local places to visit.
That curiosity finally led me to Laverstoke Mill, a name that resonates with history and now, innovation, as this former paper mill has been transformed into a world-renowned gin distillery.
This place is where the old world meets new craftsmanship, making it a must-visit for anyone intrigued by the alchemy of gin. So, let’s dive into why there’s more to gin at the Bombay Sapphire Distillery than just botanicals and spirits.

Driving through the picturesque countryside, you wouldn’t expect to stumble upon a slice of industrial heritage turned gin haven. Laverstoke Mill greeted me with its elegant brick façade and the gentle flow of the River Test, which runs right through the grounds.

It was a surprisingly sunny day, highlighting the lush green surroundings and the striking modern glass structures that have put this place on the map for design lovers and gin enthusiasts.
Choosing a tour at Laverstoke Mill can feel like selecting a favourite gin cocktail - there’s something for every taste.

Our guide, brimming with knowledge and enthusiasm, led us through the key areas of the distillery, explaining the intricate details of the vapour infusion process that sets Bombay Sapphire apart.
The contrast was striking as we moved from the historic mill buildings, with their rustic charm, into the state-of-the-art glasshouses. Here, botanicals worldwide thrive, directly contributing to the gin's complex flavours. The guides make the process accessible, no matter your prior knowledge of distilling, which I appreciated since my gin credentials were admittedly quite thin.

Naturally, the highlight for many is the tasting session. Guided tastings help demystify the flavours and show how they blend to create something truly unique. Whether you’re a gin enthusiast or a casual sipper, insights into how to best appreciate gin can transform your palette. As I mentioned, I’m not a gin lover, but I found a taste I loved!
You get a complimentary gin and tonic cocktail at the end of the tour. However, if you’re driving, they will give you a small bottle to take home.

Lastly, don’t rush your visit. Allocate a few hours to enjoy the tour, tasting, and perhaps a stroll or a meal at the Mill Café. If you’re as captivated by the distillery as I was, you’ll appreciate having the extra time to soak in the atmosphere and maybe even discover a new favourite gin.
