Discover Southampton's Vaults: A Tour Sharing Secrets Beneath the City Streets
It will give you a new appreciation for Southampton
Have you ever walked down a busy street, completely unaware of the secrets lying just beneath your feet? That was me, up until yesterday evening. I used to live in Southampton, yet I had no idea that medieval wine vaults and centuries of history were hidden right under the city streets.
It all started with the Hidden Southampton Walking Tour, led by the incredibly charismatic Nigel from SEE Southampton. This two-hour adventure through time completely changed how I see the city I once called home.
Discovering a Secret Underground World
The tour began at the Bargate, with Nigel leading us through Southampton’s Old Town and unlocking doors—literally!—to reveal hidden medieval vaults. Each space had its own story, from the bustling wine trade that once dominated the city to the Kings and Queens who played a role in its growth.
Walking through the dimly lit stone chambers felt like stepping into another world. Beneath flats and council houses lie centuries-old vaults that echo with history. It’s a fascinating reminder of how much history is hidden in plain sight.
Did you know that Southampton has around 40 medieval wine cellars hidden beneath the Old Town area? On the tour, I had the chance to see about five of them, but there are so many more to uncover. These vaults are a testament to Southampton’s importance as a gateway to Normandy and beyond after the Normans took over in 1066.
A Journey Through Time
Nigel is a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. His passion for Southampton is infectious, and his knowledge is vast but never overwhelming. With a jangling set of keys, he opened up doors to history, sharing everything from ancient legends to the city’s connection to the wine and wool trade. The medieval vaults, once filled with goods from across Europe, felt like a time capsule of the city’s prosperity.
Hearing how these vaults have survived centuries of change was fascinating. They endured brutal attacks, rebuilding efforts, and bombing raids during the Second World War. Their thick stone walls and skilfully vaulted ceilings are a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. However, they remain largely untouched to preserve their historical integrity, so don’t expect modern comforts like toilets or smooth floors—that’s part of their charm.
Hampshire Explorer’s Verdict
Even if you think you know Southampton, this tour will blow you away. It’s not just about learning history; it’s about experiencing it in a way that makes the past come alive.
At just £16 per person, the Hidden Southampton Walking Tour offers incredible value for money. I’d give this tour a solid 10/10 for its captivating storytelling, immersive exploration, and the chance to uncover secrets hidden beneath the city streets. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for Southampton’s rich history.
