Inside the Family-Run Hampshire Chippy That’s Been Smashing It Since 1988

Have you ever stumbled across a little gem and wondered how you hadn’t discovered it sooner? That’s exactly how I felt after visiting JHenry’s Fish and Chip Shop in Hedge End.

I’ve tried my fair share of fish and chips (haven’t we all?), but there’s something special about JHenry’s. Maybe it’s the food (their burger sauce is so good!), maybe it’s the warm family vibe, or maybe it’s the fact that 11 members of the same family work there, making it feel like more than just a business.

JHenrys Fish and Chips Hedge End Family

JHenry’s was started back in 1988 by Shane Lee, who moved to Hedge End at just 23 with his wife and two kids. Shane grew up working in fish and chip shops in London, and when the chance came to run his own, he took it. The shop is named after his eldest son, John-Henry, and now includes four generations of the family, keeping the tradition alive.

When I visited, I had the pleasure of meeting Sonny, Shane’s son, who was buzzing around the counter chatting with customers like old friends. He knew everyone by name -and they knew him too. You can tell this is more than just a chip shop; it’s part of the community.

This is the fish and chip lunchtime special - it’s just £6.50 for a huge portion!

And that’s not just me saying it. Their online reviews are glowing, with one customer sharing:

  • “I stumbled across this fish and chip shop about a month ago… honestly, it’s the best I’ve had for a very long time and great value for money with lovely staff. We’ll be back!”

Another added:

  • “The staff are so friendly, the shop is spotless, and the food is fresh and delicious. My favourite is the mushy peas!”

But wait, there’s more. JHenry’s isn’t just frying up top-tier fish and chips—they’re also frying up a storm on TikTok! Their account (@leefishandchips) is packed with fun, behind-the-scenes videos, and one clip has even gone viral with over 2 million views. Who knew a fish and chip shop could be so entertaining?

So, whether you’re a Hedge End local, passing through on the M27, or fancy making a detour for something truly special, JHenry’s is worth the trip. Treat yourself to the lunchtime special (it’s just £6.50 and the portions are big), sprinkle on their secret spice, and don’t forget the burger sauce—it’s a must.
