Free Fun, New Year Challenges, and What's New for 2025.
Plus a Raindy Day Activity That Got Us Off the Sofa!
Happy New Year! 🎉
I hope you had a lovely Christmas filled with good food, questionable TV, and maybe even a little time to relax. And now here we are in January—the month everyone loves to complain about. Sure, it’s not winning any awards for excitement, but I think January’s been a bit misunderstood.
It can be a slower, quieter month, and honestly, there’s something to be said for that. It’s the perfect time for cosy nights in, hearty food, and long walks where you can feel outdoorsy before retreating back to the warmth of home.
In this week’s newsletter, I’ve got ideas to brighten up these chilly days—from free places to visit and challenges to take on to exciting things coming up in Hampshire this year. Let’s ease into 2025 and make January a little brighter!
Free Places to Visit in Hampshire
You might have seen this before, but it’s worth a reminder! Our quick guide to Free Places to Visit in Hampshire offers some ideas for exploring the county without spending a penny.
Some of my favourites are Fort Nelson, Winchester City Mill and Bishop's Waltham Palace.
While the New Forest hasn’t been included, it’s another fantastic option—parking is free in many areas, and the walks are unbeatable.
Just a quick tip: be sure to check opening times before you go, as some places have reduced hours in the winter months.

Photo of the Week: Winter in the New Forest
There’s something so peaceful about the New Forest in winter, isn’t there? Even with the chill in the air, it’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle, take a deep breath, and enjoy a little quiet. The way the golden sunlight filters through the tall trees feels almost magical, casting long shadows and lighting up the mossy ground.
It’s a reminder that even in the colder months, nature has its own kind of warmth and beauty. We’re so lucky to have this incredible place right here in Hampshire—somewhere to recharge, reconnect, and soak in the fresh air.
What’s New in Hampshire for 2025! 🎉
There’s plenty happening in Hampshire this year, with exciting new attractions and events to look forward to. Here’s a quick roundup:
Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday: Special events, exhibitions, and a new walking trail celebrating Hampshire’s literary icon.
Ghostly Manor at Paultons Park: A world-first interactive dark ride opens 17th May.
Railway 200: Ride the newly restored Canadian Pacific steam locomotive on the Watercress Line in March.
Portsmouth Pride 2025: Celebrate inclusivity on 7 June with a parade, performances, and a vibrant Southsea Seafront festival.
Marwell Zoo’s Native Species Zone: Opening in March with rare species like white-clawed crayfish and sand lizards.
Steamship Shieldhall’s 70th Anniversary: Special Solent voyages and themed events throughout the year.
Challenge Yourself in 2025! 💪
January always feels like the perfect time to dream big and set yourself a challenge. Whether it’s getting fitter, trying something completely new, or just having a bit of fun, there’s no shortage of adventures in Hampshire to dive into this year. Here are a few ideas that have caught my eye (and made me wonder if I should dust off my trainers):
Run your heart out: The 10th anniversary of the ABP Southampton Marathon is coming up on 6 April 2025. From a 5K to a full marathon (or a fun run if, like me, you prefer a more leisurely pace). And if October feels more like your style, there’s the iconic Great South Run in Portsmouth to aim for too!
Reach for the sky: Imagine abseiling down the 100-metre Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth—it’s definitely one for the bucket list! Or, if you prefer your heights with a side of history, climb the spiral staircase of Winchester Cathedral’s tower for breathtaking views over the city.
Thrill-seekers unite: Paultons Park’s big seven rollercoasters are waiting for you, alongside their new Ghostly Manor attraction opening in May. And if rollercoasters aren’t your thing, why not bounce through the Inflatable 5K obstacle course in Southampton this July?
Get outside and move: There’s something magical about cycling through the New Forest—with over 100 miles of off-road routes. Or if you’re after a real endurance test, the 100km South Downs Way hike or bike ride promises incredible views to reward your efforts.
Try something completely new: Ever wanted to dive like a pro? Andark Lake offers scuba diving lessons right here in Hampshire. Or how about mastering the wind with some windsurfing, kitesurfing, or wing foiling at spots like Hayling Island and Calshot?
Craving a bit of snow: Hampshire’s got you covered with skiing and snowboarding at Calshot Activities Centre or Aldershot’s Alpine Snowsports Centre.
So, are you ready to take on a challenge this year? If you’re planning to do (or are already doing!) any of these, let me know—I’d love to hear how you’re getting on and might even be inspired to join in! 😊
