A Circle of Trees, New Forest Walks and a Tasty Food
Plus fireworks and this week's events
Good morning Hampshire. Remember, remember the 5th of November!
We hope you had a lovely half-term and made some wonderful memories. There are a few more fireworks displays to catch, and with Remembrance Sunday approaching, it’s a time to reflect as well.
And from next week, you’ll notice a sprinkle of Christmas content heading your way. Yes, I know it’s only November - but with shops already filling shelves with decorations and festive stock, it seems the countdown is well underway! Meanwhile, don’t miss out on our guide to Christmas Light Switch-On Events across Hampshire for 2024.
A Place to Vist: A Magical Walk Just Minutes from Southampton
Alright, if you're up for a peaceful woodland wander, the Chilworth Conservation Area is such a hidden gem! Start by driving into Southampton Science Park and taking an immediate right toward the Best Western Chilworth Manor. Follow the road until you reach the hotel. There's usually free parking in their lot, but if it’s busy, check the visitor spots in the Science Park.
Once parked, head around the back of the hotel, where the magic begins. Don’t worry about rigid pathways; this is the place to meander, take in the greenery, and simply enjoy—though sensible shoes are a must, especially if it’s been raining. Chilworth Conservation Area covers 27 acres, established in 1989, and it's a stunning mix of ancient woodland and meadow. With a What3Words location of ///downs.appendix.minimums, you’ll find your way here easily.
The Conservation Area feels like a world of its own, divided into four unique sections. Buxey Wood is a true gem, showcasing ancient coppiced trees and native flora like wood sorrel, English bluebells, and Solomon’s seal. Move a little further, and you'll find a historic woodland plantation dating to the 1800s, filled with ash, oak, sycamore, sweet chestnut, and even pines clustered into a group known as "The Clump."
If you wander toward the open areas, you'll stumble upon grass and heathland brimming with wildflowers, including beautiful orchids in the warmer months. The real centrepiece, though, is the unimproved meadow. It’s a botanist’s dream and a haven for rare plants and animals. You might even spot a slow worm, grass snake, or (if you’re lucky) an adder basking in the sun. There’s also a “deer ring” made of two concentric circles of pines, once used to enclose deer before hunting was banned.
For an extra treat, walk up to the pond – it’s such a peaceful spot to rest and take in the view. And when you’re done, the Chilworth Manor’s bar offers a great spot to recharge with a drink. Or, if you prefer a pub, the Chilworth Arms is just outside the Science Park entrance and is perfect for a cosy pint.
If you’re bringing kids, swing by Chilworth Common nearby. It has a quiet little park and is great for a kickabout. The Conservation Area also runs volunteer days where you can get hands-on with conservation - find out more info here.
Photo of the Week: Eyeworth Pond
This beautiful autumnal shot, taken by Ann-Marie Britton, captures the tranquillity of Eyeworth Pond in the New Forest. This pond has an intriguing history—it was originally created in the 19th century as a reservoir, supplying water to a nearby gunpowder factory. Nowadays, it's a haven for wildlife and a peaceful spot for walkers.
If you fancy visiting, there’s a free car park right beside the pond (SO43 7HJ or What3Words: amending/marathon/inherits). Enjoy a leisurely walk along the paths that wind around the pond, taking in the scenic views and spotting local wildlife. For a detailed walking route, check out The Ambling Path’s guide to Eyeworth Pond.

A Place to Eat: Forte Kitchen in Winchester
So, I finally discovered Forte Kitchen in Winchester—it’s tucked away above a couple of shops, and I had no idea it was there! I only spotted it because of “The Hatch,” which is like this casual spot where you can grab something quick and sit outside if you want. But if you head upstairs, you’ll find their actual restaurant, which is super popular (it was absolutely packed!).
We went for the soup of the day and a chicken burger with fries. Honestly, the food was so good—simple but full of flavour, and you can tell they really care about what they’re serving. It’s one of those places that’s so easy to miss but totally worth finding.
